Our Why: MYP as a Driver for Equity

Lincoln High School is a Middle Years Programme (MYP) School. IB World Schools share a common philosophy- a commitment to high-quality, challenging, international education- that we believe is important for our students. 

Adopting the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) completes our transition to becoming an IB World School by ensuring that not only every junior and senior takes at least three DP classes, but also that all of our freshmen and sophomores experience IB through the lens of IB MYP as the framework for the teaching and learning in all of their classes.

Our aspiration to provide an inclusive IB program that reduces barriers and increases access as a tool to promote equity, rather than offering an elite academic program for some that emphasizes rigor and exclusion, is our main reason for becoming an MYP school.

We believe that IB MYP represents an unprecedented opportunity within PPS to ensure greater access to DP classes and increased levels of confidence for our students for these reasons:

IB MYP helps students transition into high school.

• • A student who can move from 8th to 9th grade with familiar experience will be more likely to succeed in 9th grade and more likely to graduate on time as a result. Since most of our students come from IB MYP schools, we believe that continuing with MYP at Lincoln will support students as they adjust to Lincoln.

  • IB MYP students experience familiar language and consistent expectations as they move from class to class, year to year. This offers powerful opportunities to deepen learning and supports students who already have a lot to think about in adjusting to their new big and complex high school.

MYP fosters successful DP students. 

• • An inquiry-based curriculum that emphasizes perspective taking (global and local) and service as action, the MYP prepares students to think across subjects as they build skills toward 11th and 12th grade coursework. Most importantly, the IB Learner Profile is a foundation in MYP and DP programs that gives students a sense of purpose as they strive to create a better and more peaceful world.

MYP students practice important life-long skills in every class every day. 

• • MYP student skills include communication, social, self-management, research, and thinking. These are called Approaches to Learning and are a core part of every MYP lesson.

More students will see themselves as IB-capable.

• • We anticipate DP class enrollment will continue to expand with more students feeling well prepared for them following two-years (plus) of IB coursework.
